Job Summary :
The Research Specialist IV Bioinformatics will conduct research in a number of scientific disciplines including but not limited to computational genomics, statistical genetics, data mining, and deep learning and in silico systems biology.
The main research will focus on unravelling the genomic underpinnings of biological traits and genetic diseases prevalent in Qatar and the MENA region, ultimately leading to novel therapeutic targets and approaches.
It will involve applying and developing computational methods for large-scale analysis of genetic data from state-of-the-
art technologies including long-read sequencing and other omics and phenotypic human data.
The Research Specialist IV Bioinformatics will be supervised by the Principal Investigator (PI), and is responsible for contributing to study design and execution, scientific presentation and publication in line with the PI’s research program.
He / She is expected to be productive, interactive with other research personnel, and provide training to undergraduate and graduate students.
Also, perform complex scientific technical work, evaluating, selecting and applying methods to specialized assignments that may not always have clear and specific objectives.
Assignments require investigation of a wide number of variables and highly complex features in order to identify issues and apply solutions.
The role requires the ability to Work independently, to exercise judgment and to utilize previous experience and precedent in making technical decisions related to delegated tasks.
The Research Specialist IV Bioinformatics is an independent, self-motivated individual who with minimal supervision successfully accomplishes the delegated tasks.
Key Role Accountabilities :
Contributes to the delivery of departmental goals, through personal effort in own work area.
Shares responsibility for the timely completion of assigned tasks and ensures constant progress in research pertaining to specialty area.
Analyzes and processes research data involving NGS and long read data, omics and phenotypic data using advanced analytical tools.
Executes research studies by designing, conducting experiments and by generating research data.
Conducts research data mining and data management.
Works closely with the Principle Investigator and other research team members to ensure efficacy of the research project.
Ensures project completion time line in accordance with the rules and guidelines of the funding agency.
Publishes papers as results of the research in high quality peer-reviewed journals.
Communicates results to the relevant scientific community via published papers and academic conference presentations, both locally and internationally.
Collaborates with other Sidra members and external collaborators (including international collaborators) to carry out the proposed research plan.
Travels occasionally to collaborating institutions for the purpose of the research study.
Participates in procurement of additional / new funding through contributions to technical proposal preparation and / or presentations.
Stays current with literature in ongoing and proposed research projects.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills Selection Criteria :
Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field
Master’s Degree in a relevant field
7+ years of experience in processing and analyzing high throughput data (next-generation sequencing and / or omics technologies)
Academic and / or industrial research experience with publications in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at international conferences
Work experience in a clinical research setting / hospital-affiliated institution or in biotechnology industry
Experience working with long-read sequencing technologies from PacBio, BioNano, 10X and Nanopore
