Job Summary :

The Special Feed Unit Technician assumes responsibility for the preparation and labeling of specialized feeds following strict guidelines for standards of food handling hygiene and using written procedures under the guidance of the pediatric dietitians for infants and children in Sidra Medical and Research Center.

The unit is open 7 days a week including national holidays and staff work a 2 rota system. Key Roles & Responsibilities :

  • Works as a team member in the preparation of infant formulas and modular feeds. This includes :
  • Verifies new or questionable feed orders provided by the Registered Dietitian for accuracy and obtains standardized recipes as needed

    Prepares infant formulas and modular feeds accurately according to established recipes, following pre-established feeding preparation procedures and adhering to quality control standards.

    Uses correct and accurate technique to measure powders and liquids

    Stores prepared feeds properly until delivery to the patient area.

    Maintains daily records and updates computerized patient profile regarding the feed order

    Completes daily batch records for prepared feedings

    Maintains a daily log of refridgeration and heating temperatures, including refridgerators in the patient care unit.

    Maintains sufficient stock and order adequate supplies to meet patients needs

    Completes daily tally or census sheets indicating formulas prepared

    Prepares storeroom or purchasing requisition for all infant formula , glassware, bottles, enteral feeding bags, teats, and other supplies and notifies supervisor of any shortages

    Orders products and supplies and notifies supervisor of any shortages

    Checks expiration dates on products on delivery and in storage

    Follows procedures for formula recalls at the direction of the supervisor

    Maintains sanitation in the preparation area of the special feed unit

    Cleans and sanitizes all work surfaces in the preparation room before and after each feeding preparation

    Cleans utensils, equipment, and storage areas used in the infant feeding preparation room according to established procedures.

    Follows aseptic technique

    Follows department and infection control policies regarding feeding handling

    When appropriate, prepares samples for bacteria check according to established protocol

    Maintains daily appearance and personal hygiene according to departmental guidelines

    Secure the feeding preparation room

    Operates all equipment needed to prepare infant formulas and modular feeds e.g weighing scales, blast chillers, dishwashers

    Fills temperature records and feeding orders

    Check equipment for proper operation and reports problems to the supervisor

    Prepares monthly quality assurance report and production summaries

    Demonstrates to patients / carers / ancillary personnel how to safely prepare their individual feeds following the dietitians recipe as needed.

    Provides orientation support to new starters in the department.

    Deals effectively with the telephone enquiries from nursing / medical staff, ensuring that all messages and requests for feeds are recorded and liaise with dietitians appropriately.

    Prioritizes own workload to ensure work is completed in a timely manner.

    Perform additional duties as assigned

    Adheres to Sidra’s standards as they appear in the Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest policies

    Maintains confidentiality of women and children at all times.

    In view of the evolving needs and opportunities within Sidra during this pre-operational phase, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary.

    Essential Requirements : Education

  • Relevant qualification preferred
  • Experience

  • 2+ years of relevant experience or appropriate education
  • Certification and Licensure

  • Basic food hygiene certificate level 1 or recognized or equivalent
