JOB SUMMARY : The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a key member of the clinical nursing team, implementing the clinical supervision principles, providing clinical leadership, peer supervision, clinical teaching, clinical mentoring, coaching and reflective practice and acts as the link between practice developments, evidence based practice and education to ensure high quality care and the best patient outcome.

The CNS works with the clinical nurses and midwives to develop and maintain all the clinical competencies required for the specified clinical area.

The CNS works clinically at the bedside, assessing clinical standards of care, assesses staff knowledge and skills, carries out clinical audits, assists staff to develop personal development plans and establishes a clinical programme to support staff development.

The CNS champions innovation in healthcare by being a change advocate for evidence-based initiatives. The CNS, also fills the role of Clinical Nurse Leader when required, working collaboratively with the Nurse Manager to ensure that commissioning, recruitment, onboarding, orientation and service activation responsibilities are carried out in accordance with Sidra’s plans and timelines.


Makes recommendations to the Manager regarding decisions that have a unit / service impact.

Makes day to day decisions regarding unit operations that impact staff.

Makes recommendations for strategies to improve the nurturing environment for staff.

Makes day to day decisions about staff allocations to ensure the appropriate staff are allocated to the correct patients to promote the best learning environment.

Makes decisions about care pathways and service provision to ensure the highest clinical outcomes for patients.

Provides shift supervision and guidance to staff in collaboration with Clinical Educators, Clinical Nurse Leaders and Clinical Midwife Leaders ensuring that all care is provided in accordance with Core Standards of Nursing and Midwifery Care and established policies and procedures.

Understands and maintains confidentiality of information at all times.

Implements strategies which improve the quality of care and services provided within each clinical unit

Provides peer supervision and assists staff in the development of professional development plans.

Provides a nurturing environment for staff facilitating reflective practice towards performance improvement.

Provides good leadership, problem solving, communication and decision making skills as well as a commitment to bring about a change in practice.

Raises the profile of clinical supervision for staff in collaboration with them.

Demonstrates expert clinical knowledge and skills for the specialized patient group, as per where they are located.

Supports the Clinical Nurse Manager to ensure each unit has an effective comprehensive unit based safety programme aligned to the overall corporate programmes.

Observes clinical care standards provided by staff and encourages self-reflection and peer supervision to improve patient outcomes

Narrows the theory practice gap through clinical mentoring, coaching and encouragement of clinical nurses to self-reflect in the clinical environment

Liaises with Practice Development, evidence based practice staff and the education team and acts as a link to these services for the unit.

Communicates regularly with the allocated CNL or CML leader, co-workers and Manager.

Serves as a professional and role model for staff and is an advocate for patients and their families demonstrating behaviors consistent with the organizational / education competency framework, Sidra values, policies, procedures and guidelines.

Evaluates and ensures that clinical documentation, nursing diagnoses and plans of care are integrated and effective in delivering an individual plan of care.

Promotes a safe environment and safe patient care by embracing a safety culture and identifying areas of risk.

Demonstrates an understanding of evidence-based healthcare methodology and its’ ability to positively impact patient outcomes.

Participates in the integration and evaluation of research into practice.

Utilizes outcome measures to evaluate effectiveness of care through the review of data and the questioning of inconsistencies.

Works towards the achievement of agreed key performance indicators for self and unit.

Identifies patient care issues and / or strategies to improve and positively impact on the quality of care and patient outcomes.

Collaborates with the Nurse Manager, Clinical Nurse Leaders, Clinical Midwife Leaders, and Clinical Educators in planning, implementation and evaluation of patient / family and staff education.

Applies problem solving techniques and evidence based solutions to unit / clinic / service related issues. Evaluates and ensures appropriate escalation of issues to meet patient / family / staff needs and resolve conflicts.

Ensures the effective orientation, precepting and support of new staff and students.

Provides a welcoming work environment and monitors and tracks individuals’ progress.

Contributes to the employee performance appraisal cycle objectively and assists with action plans arising from appraisals as necessary.

Supports the retention of all staff by creating a healthy work environment that facilitates teamwork, and treats colleagues, patients / families and visitors with dignity and respect at all times.

Ensures relevant information is communicated to all staff effectively and efficiently.

Maintains effective administrative processes in the unit / clinic / service and reviews and revises unit / clinic / service policies and procedures as required.

Contributes to the achievement of cost efficiency savings in the unit / clinic / service and maintains an awareness of resource utilization, exercising care in the ordering and use of equipment and materials.

Reports equipment failures, safety and security issues, and / or reduction of supply inventory.

Supports the achievement of successfully implementing clinical information systems at unit level.

Leads Performance Improvement activities and committees on the unit / clinic / service as assigned.

Develops and sustains own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness and maintains a professional profile.

Provides documented evidence of own performance and maintenance of skills consistent with position.

Deputizes for the Nurse Manager as required.

Follows all organizational policies and procedures.

Adheres to Sidra’s standards as they appear in the Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest policies.

Adheres to and promotes Sidra’s Values.

In view of the evolving needs and opportunities within Sidra, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary.



  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or equivalent
  • Registered Nurse
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or
  • Post graduate program equivalent to Master’s degree in the clinical area of specialty
  • Experience

  • 4 years of recent clinical nursing experience including 2 years of leadership experience in specialty area
  • Experience in an Academic Medical Center
  • Demonstrated experience with Clinical Information Systems
  • Certification and Licensure

  • Valid professional nursing license in country of origin
  • Meets licensing requirements of the State of Qatar
  • Post graduate specialty certification
  • Professional Membership

  • Member of a professional nursing association

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Arabic speaking and / or bilingual in other languages
  • Demonstrated team building and leadership skills.
