Position Location : Doha, Qatar. It is expected that this senior leadership position will have an in-person work arrangement and will live and work in Doha, Qatar.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the VCUarts Qatar Dean, the Associate Dean for Administration provides direction, advice and support for the administrative management of VCUarts Qatar.

The position provides direct or shared oversight, as determined by the Dean, of Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Safety and Facilities, Communications, and the Bookstore.

The Associate Dean advises and informs the Dean on the administrative operation of VCUarts Qatar and works with all campus administrators to ensure compliance with applicable University, Virginia State, and United States Federal policies, procedures, and regulations, as well as Qatari law.

Provides leadership in planning, implementing, evaluating, and modifying operational and administrative processes impacting VCUarts Qatar.

VCUarts Qatar

VCUarts Qatar is the international branch campus of Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts (VCUarts). VCUarts Qatar was established in 1998 through a partnership with the Qatar Foundation and offers students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in fashion design, graphic design, interior design and painting & printmaking;

a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history; and a Master of Fine Arts degree in design. Located in Doha, the capital city of Qatar, VCUarts Qatar is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art & Design, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Council for Interior Design Accreditation.

The instruction is conducted in the English language. The current student body represents a diverse range of nationalities.

VCUarts Qatar is dedicated to global outreach and education and provides students with an environment for cross-cultural exchange that fosters inquiry, discovery and innovation.

Examples of this mission are the two significant international conferences hosted by VCUarts Qatar the biennial design conference, Tasmeem and the biennial Hamad bin Khalifa Symposium on Islamic Art (www.

islamicartdoha.org). VCUarts Qatar attracts globally recognized designers, artists and scholars while fostering partnerships within the region, and beyond, that enhance the educational, economic and cultural vitality of Qatar.

Having established itself as a center of excellence for education and research, VCUarts Qatar has substantial involvement with the influential art and design world of the Middle East, and is a catalyst for the growth and development of these fields in the region.

VCUarts Qatar has over 150 full-time faculty and staff and a student body of more than 300 students. VCUarts Qatar was the first campus established in Education City, a unique 2500-acre multiversity campus.

VCUarts Qatar was joined by Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, Carnegie-Mellon University, Texas A&M University, Weill Cornell Medical College, Northwestern University, and HEC Paris.

Qatar, with English as the standard second language, is a progressive country in the Arabian Gulf and remains one of the healthiest economies in the Gulf region.

Doha offers all the conveniences found in a contemporary and cosmopolitan city, while honoring a rich tradition that is evident in the old markets and the city’s Islamic Arab architecture.

VCUarts Richmond

Ranked by US News & World Report as a top-five arts and design school, VCUarts (arts.vcu.edu), located in Richmond, Virginia, includes over 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students with nationally recognized programs in design, visual and performing arts, and has an annual budget of $38 million and an endowment of more than $13.

5 million. Students are taught by over 175 full-time teaching and research faculty members and the school is supported by over 60 staff members that assist in daily processes.

The School includes two campuses; one in Richmond and one in Doha, Qatar. The Richmond campus is located on the university’s 75-acre Monroe Park campus situated in the city’s historic Fan District.

Ultimately, the work of the School of the Arts extends globally with partnerships throughout the world and across fields as diverse as the humanities, health care and business.

Major Responsibilities

Contributes to the leadership of VCUarts Qatar as a whole.

Works with VCUarts Qatar’s administrative team as a collaborative, solutions oriented partner.

In collaboration with appropriate offices at VCUarts Qatar, on the main campus in Richmond, Virginia, and with the Qatar Foundation, establishes, monitors, evaluates, and modifies processes, procedures, and / or standards, ensuring alignment with VCUarts Qatar’s mission, values, goals, and objectives, as well as all Qatari, Virginia state, and U.

S. federal laws and regulations. Plans, organizes, administers, and manages processes and operations related to assigned areas of responsibility;

interprets and applies federal and state mandated guidelines. Plans, implements, administers, and evaluates related projects and services impacting VCUarts Qatar.

Communicates the interpretation of policies and procedures to the staff, faculty, and external organizations, as necessary.

Communicates in a clear, consistent, and transparent manner using excellent written, verbal and digital communication skills.

Establishes credibility throughout the university as an effective developer of solutions to operational and administrative challenges, creating a welcoming and supportive environment.

Mentors, manages, and inspires a team of senior staff supervised by this position while creating a positive, inclusive work environment that values experience and new ideas.

Ensures that the school’s culture of appreciation, diversity, inclusion, integrity and respect are consistently demonstrated.

Participates in institutional strategic planning.

Evaluates administrative impact of long-range planning and advises the Dean.

Attends board meetings and delivers reports on areas of oversight.

Responsible for effective communication and collaboration with officials and representatives from VCU, Qatar Foundation, external organizations, and other interested groups and individuals with regard to the VCUarts Qatar’s administration.

Engages regularly with the VCUarts Dean’s Office and other members of the home campus administration.

Develops effective relationships with administrative leaders at other Qatar Foundation Partner Universities.

Serves as a liaison with the home campus-designated legal office in Qatar.

Manages and provides guidance on the university’s procurement operations including staff supervision and legal compliance.

Produces ad hoc reports for the Dean.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.

Substantial executive / administration management experience and supervision of staff.

Working knowledge of human resources, financial policies and practices, public affairs, and institutional strategy development.

Understanding of the work performed by safety and facilities offices, technology services, and communications.

Proven ability to interpret policies and procedures, analyze data and make recommendations and decisions.

Superior written, oral and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively and tactfully at different levels of the organization and with external stakeholders.

Superior patience, composure, and professionalism in all situations.

Proven ability to work independently, prioritize and manage multiple tasks while meeting strict deadlines, and handle confidential materials.

Demonstrated high levels of initiative, resourcefulness, creative problem solving, independence, and attention to detail.

Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse organizational environment, and / or faculty, staff, and student environment, and a commitment to do so as a member of VCUarts Qatar with acute cultural sensitivity.

Experience in crisis management and ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive situations.

Ability to make effective and persuasive presentations on complex topics to all levels of the organization.

Ability to be flexible to adapt to changing circumstances and manage administrative changes while leading employees through transition.

Preferred Qualifications

A graduate degree in a related field or significant training and professional experience that equates to a graduate degree.

Extensive experience working within a higher education environment.

Experience working within international contexts.
