Job Summary

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is the tertiary level service for Qatar. We currently have 36 cots spread across two locations (14 ICU / 12 HDU cots and 10 Special Care cots).

The neonatal service is in the process of further expansion due to increasing demand. We provide excellent care for extreme preterm babies, and for sick term new born babies including cardiac and full range of neonatal surgery.

We are currently in the process of developing a neonatal network and work collaboratively with other neonatal units in the country.

Excellent clinical care is our priority, along with contributing to a positive family experience. The Clinical Nurse Leader supports the Clinical Nurse Manager in leading, precepting and mentoring the nursing and midwifery staff as clinical expert in a unit / service.

The Clinical Nurse Leader is a key member of the inter-professional team and ensures that standards for nursing and midwifery care are adhered to at unit / service level while working within an assigned shift.

The incumbent is accountable for shift coordination, patient flow, patient experience and resource allocation.

Key Role Accountabilities

  • Makes recommendations to the Manager regarding decisions that have a unit level impact
  • Makes day to day decisions regarding unit operations that impact quality and efficiency of patient care
  • Delivers nursing care to patients and rounds to support efficient patient pathways
  • Makes day to day decisions about staff allocations during shift to ensure that appropriate staff are allocated to the correct patients to promote safe patient care and the best learning environment
  • Prioritizes high and low risk patients based on patient centered assessment and plan of care
  • Provides shift supervision and guidance to staff in collaboration with Clinical Educators and Clinical Nurse Specialists ensuring that all care is provided in accordance with Core Standards of Nursing and Midwifery Care and established policies and procedures
  • Provides individualized patient care as per Qatar Council for Healthcare Practitioners Licensure Scope, the core standards of nursing and midwifery care and leads on clinical practice
  • Coordinates complex patient care needs in collaboration with other clinical staff
  • Ensures safe and high quality patient care during shift through appropriate and equitable allocation of work to the team based on patient acuity and skill mix
  • Supports the junior staff when there are emergencies and / or patient complaints with escalation
  • Coordinates with bed management on patient bed assignments
  • Produces, coordinates and manages day to day staff assignments for the assigned shift
  • Facilitates patient flow and coordinates patient’s activities and communication during shift
  • Role-models patient experience principles, provides service recovery and identifies continuous improvement opportunities as required
  • Identifies patient care issues and / or ways to improve and positively impact on the quality of care and patient outcomes
  • Supports the Clinical Nurse Manager to ensure each unit has an effective comprehensive unit based safety programme aligned to the overall corporate programmes
  • Supports the Clinical Nurse Manager in the employee performance appraisal cycle objectively and assists with action plans arising from appraisals as necessary
  • Contributes to the achievement of cost efficiency savings in the unit and maintains an awareness of resource utilization, exercising care in the ordering and use of equipment and materials
  • Leads Performance Improvement activities on the unit towards the achievement of agreed key performance indicators as assigned
  • Supports the selection, development and retention of all staff
  • Adheres to Sidra’s standards as they appear in the Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest policies

  • In view of the evolving needs and opportunities within Sidra, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary.

    Qualifications, Experience And Skills

    Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or equivalent
  • Registered Nurse
  • Preferred - Master’s Degree in Nursing
  • Experience

  • A minimum of 4 years recent clinical nursing experience within a tertiary NICU, including 2 years leadership / supervisory / charge experience in NICU
  • NICU applicants require Level III skills, including mechanical ventilation and neonates surgery
  • Preferred - Demonstrated experience with Clinical Information Systems and Hospital Commissioning
  • Certification and Licensure

  • Valid professional Nursing license from country of origin
  • Preferred - Post graduate NICU certification

  • Demonstrated ability to de-escalate conflict situations within a unit
  • Demonstrated ability to teach, assess and develop educational materials for staff and patients is desirable

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
