JOB SUMMARY

The Nurse Transfusion Safety works with the pediatric and maternal physician, nursing, and laboratory staff to promote safe and appropriate use of blood and blood products in accordance with national and international guidelines

KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES :

  • Promotes safe and appropriate pediatric / maternal blood transfusion practice throughout Sidra.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of clinical transfusion policies, protocols and procedures which are in accordance with national and international guidelines.
  • Effectively coordinates with the Educational Nurse Specialists and others to guide the training and education of clinical nursing staff regarding transfusion practice.
  • Assists with the provision of transfusion safety information to health care practitioners and, through them, to patients and their families.
  • Identifies facilitators and addresses barriers that affect patient outcomes as they relate to transfusion.
  • Works with the Medical Director Transfusion Lab to develop processes for monitoring and managing transfusion errors, adverse events, and near-miss events.
  • Audits clinical compliance with transfusion guidelines, policies, and processes, and effectively disseminates analysis of this compliance information to clinical staff.
  • Leads transfusion reaction follow-up : chart review, patient contact, and nurse / physician interview, with presentation of data to hematopathologist for sign-off.
  • Performs transfusion audits : collects and presents summary transfusion data for ward-by-ward analysis, for sign-off by hematopathologist and hospital transfusion committee
  • Performs root cause analysis following a transfusion error or near-miss : this will involve laboratory data collection, chart review, nurse / physician interview and presentation of data to the hematopathologist for sign-off.
  • Provides focused post-error / post-near-miss transfusion education for laboratory and nursing staff : following an error or near miss, the TSN reviews clinical SOPs with nurses and other involved providers, to help reduce the likelihood of future errors or near-misses.
  • Liaises between the transfusion medicine laboratory and clinical areas, and addresses issues related to transfusion practice between these settings.
  • Leads transfusion related clinical practice and quality improvement initiatives for clinical units or programs.
  • Adheres to Sidra’s standards as they appear in the Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest policies.

  • In view of the evolving needs and opportunities within Sidra, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary.

    Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
  • Registered Nurse
  • Master’s degree in Nursing

    Experience

  • 5+ year’s clinical nursing experience including 2+ years as a Transfusion Safety Nurse / Transfusion Safety Officer or 2+ years in a high-
  • transfusion clinical environment.

  • Experience in organizing data and generating thorough, accurate, timely reports
  • Demonstrated experience with Clinical Information Systems (CIS)
  • Certification and Licensure

  • Licensed + / - Certified in Country of Origin
  • Current BLS certification
  • Professional Membership

  • Fluency in written and spoken English
