About the Brookings Doha Center

Based in Qatar, the Brookings Doha Center (BDC) is an overseas center of the Brookings Institution that advances high-quality independent policy research and analysis on major issues facing the Middle East / North Africa region.

The Center enjoys an outstanding reputation for policy impact and cutting-edge, field-oriented research on socioeconomic and geopolitical issues facing the broader Middle East region.

Open to a broad range of views and disciplines, the BDC is a hub for Brookings scholarship in the region.

Fellow / Senior Fellow

The Fellow / Senior Fellow will lead a multi-faceted program of research, analysis, and policy engagement in order to provide in depth understanding of the MENA region and develop ideas to help respond to the current challenges and instability facing the region.

  • In particular, the Fellow / Senior Fellow will focus on one or more of the following substantive areas : International relations of the Middle East;
  • geopolitical and regional security arrangements; displacement and humanitarian assistance; conflict and post-conflict reconstruction;
  • national reconciliation; radicalization and counter-terrorism.

    Responsibilities

  • The Fellow / Senior Fellow will undertake his or her own research projects; publish Analysis Papers and Policy Briefings through BDC channels;
  • produce journal articles, commentaries, and book-length monographs; develop and lead multi-stakeholder research projects;
  • lead issue-focused meetings; and interact with the national and international media through interviews and other media appearances.

    The Fellow / Senior Fellow will also contribute to other BDC activities. Alongside their individual research, BDC Fellows are expected to be active members of the BDC community, engaging with colleagues and participating in BDC research projects, public events, monthly meetings, discussion forums and policy roundtables, and contributing to the BDC blog with op-

    eds covering relevant, current policy issues. Fellows also engage with policymakers, academics, diplomats, government officials, and journalists, as well as regional business leaders.

    Qualifications

    Education / Experience Requirements

    Applicants should have a Ph.D. in political science, international relations, history, political economy, or a related discipline and several years of professional experience in a relevant field.

    They must have an in-depth understanding and practical experience in one or more of the substantive areas outlined above and must have a demonstrated ability to conduct and publish professional, in-depth research.

    In addition to academic credentials, competitive candidates will have experience making or implementing foreign policy, conducting policy analysis, or a proven record of publishing books and articles in internationally-

    known professional or academic journals and news publications, or both.

    Knowledge / Skills Requirements

    The individual must have a proven ability to conduct original policy research and analysis and to disseminate it to audiences to achieve public policy impact.

    The individual must be able to lead and undertake both large-scale research projects and issue-focused meetings, conferences, and other events with little supervision.

    Fluency in English and Arabic is required, along with outstanding written and oral communication skills. The successful candidate must be motivated yet flexible, diplomatic, creative, trustworthy, and able to thrive in a fast-

    paced environment. Strong candidates should have extensive contacts among the policy, academic, and business communities, and must be comfortable working with and presenting to policymakers, current and potential funders, and Brookings senior management.

    Salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

    Program Requirements

    Fellow / Senior Fellow must be available for a full-time affiliation with the BDC, and be based in Qatar; and expected to be active participants in BDC activities, including but not limited to regularly organized policy discussions, seminars, workshops, and other events.

    Fellow / Senior Fellow must be familiar with and uphold the Brookings Institution’s commitment to independent, nonpartisan research and publication, and to maintaining the highest level of integrity in pursuit of this mission.
